Mercedes Benz 4x4 1017A

Owner's description:

Mercedes Benz Expedition Campervan

Our tough overland camper van is regretfully now for sale. The base vehicle is an ex German Army 4x4 1017A made in 1986. The odometer reading is less than 160,000 kms mostly because the vehicle was stored for many years by the Army. With good maintenance 1017A's can cover perhaps a 1,000,000 kms. It has no electronics and is simple to maintain. Spare parts are readily available but this sale includes a number of useful and valuable essentials ranging from a new turbo to a radiator cap.

The vehicle was obtain from the Army in Germany where the box for the living quarters was made and installed on a torsion free sub chassis by Fuess. Other modifications included two new fuel tanks with an additional fuel filter. The vehicle was imported to the UK where the interior was constructed in 2007 to a professional standard using high quality equipment. In addition there are two spare wheels, along with special equipment to make changing wheels fairly easy.

This vehicle has been through the Sahara, across the steppes of Asia, over the Himalayas, visited the Far East and spent a long time in Africa. Just imagine where you could go with a vehicle like this!!

Owner's description:

Mercedes 4x4 four wheel drive 814DA expedition motorhome.

Due to a re-occurring illness we are now reluctantly offering for sale our superb Mercedes motor home. This four wheel drive motor home was professional converted in 2009 by an English company to the highest of standards into a bespoke vehicle designed to travel around the world on bad roads/ gravel tracks and keep passengers safe and comfortable. It has proven to be a very reliable vehicle and a pleasure to own.

The motor home is built on the very reliable four wheel drive Mercedes 814DA 7500Kg chassis and is made to cope with some of the worlds worst roads. This is not a full go anywhere off road vehicle, but one that can handle the poorest of roads and tracks, it has good ground clearance and plenty of storage.

The chassis was first registered in Germany in 1992 and had completed only 60,000 miles when brought to the UK. Since completion of the conversion it has covered a further 49,950 miles (109,950 in total) A million miles is not uncommon for these Mercedes 814 vehicles and at 110,000 miles it is only just run in. It is fully serviced and offered for sale with all the spare parts that we carry as a ‘keep it moving repair kit’ The motor home is ready to go. The last MOT was in December 2012 and once again went through without any problems.

Owner's description:

Unimog 404. Ex French Military.

This vehicle is in very good condition for its age and comes with all the canvas covers and rear bench seating. I have owned this vehicle for a couple of years and just used it to drive around the fields, the rest of the time it lives in a barn away from the elements. The chassis is in great condition and there are only a couple of very small rust patches on the bodywork. It is all very solid, with very good tyres and spare. I think it has done about 38,000 kilometers.

The bad points: Although it runs very well it probably needs a good service, the foot brakes don't work very well, but the hand-brake is good. (I think brakes are low on fluid).

The vehicle is based at my holiday house in France (near Dijon) and any interested parties would be very welcome to stay overnight if they came to look at or buy the vehicle. It is not road legal. (I am sure this is not difficult) so the potential purchaser would need to bring some form of low-loader with them. The drive from Calais in a lorry would be about six hours.

Model:

Unimog 1700L38 Raised Crew-Cab.

Owner's description:

This 1988, 140.000km Unimog has been lovingly kept and customized to specific personal standards, destined as an overland travelling unit for 4/5 people in any conditions, and with maximum comfort.

It was originally used as a mobile work station for a large industry in Germany which had a fleet of Unimogs, in the rear cell there was everything from welding equipment to compressors and a full set of tools and spare parts. Most of the time it was servicing another vehicle, hence the low mileage of 100.000kms when I purchased it. I also don't know how long it was not used before I bought it but I had to change the head gasket as it had dried due to standing still. The longest trip I have made was to Nord Kapp two years ago and the previous year I travelled down through Libia to the border of Somalia, covering about 6.000km, most of which was sand and pists.

I would leave for Australia tomorrow if I had the opportunity without doing anything on it and this is how I feel about the reliability of the vehicle.

This "one of its kind" was not built to be sold but to fulfil the dreams of a family and the pleasure of the driver. In the last 6 years both have been achieved even though life has a way of playing tricks on you as time passes. The Unimog was originally designed to be an excellent work horse and, in my opinion, is the best off road vehicle on the present world market. This example is ready to go wherever you want, now!

Owner's description:

Unimog Camper 1300L (4x4)

This is a unique Unimog Camper 1300L (4x4) in very good condition both mechanically and body work (no rust).

It was built as a mobile welding workshop, and then converted as a camper and is MOT exempt (special vehicle).

Mechanics.

It has had all new brakes (pads and discs), new brake valve, and trailer air valve. It also has a new starter motor. The tyres are Michelin KZL tyres with still a lot of life in them. There is a 5th spare wheel on a rack over the cab. Trailer brakes lines (both red and yellow lines), trailer hitch and hook up.

This Mog has done very little km, in fact the clock was on 31,000km when we got it (January 2008) but we changed the clock, as it stopped working and changed it to a second hand one (by Atkinson Vos) which is why it says 106,000. The current km is more like around 40,000km. This vehicle used to stand with the motor running the hydraulic generator, rather than covering much land.

We have traveled some 10,000 km over Europe in it, and it has been used as one of our on site vehicles (www.spiritsintent.com).

Generator.

There is a 25 kva single phase hydraulic generator (runs off the PTO) in full working order. There is a box allowing you to choose the input from either the generator or the mains hook up. There used to be much more outlets connected but we have never rewired them after changing the box. The generator with the hydraulic pump and motor is worth some money. With loads of outlets, we used it for on site welding and sawing.

Tail-Lift.

This is a very roboust hydraulic tail lift, and very rare on a Unimog (in fact the only one we know of). It is a 12 volt system which runs off the truck battery or its own separate one.

Inside.

The box body is insulated with fiberglass insulation, is well insulated and all wooden inside: red oak panelling the walls and ash floor. The bed (pine slats) is fronted with a large ash trunk with an original carving in it. There is a small opening stainless steel window at one end of the bed.

Under the bed is a small door and the 25kva generator with its gauges, as well as ample storage space.

There is a ceiling to floor cubby-hole unit next to the bed and opposite is the kitchen which has a 4-ring LPG hob (the best we've ever seen!) and several original designed cupboards.

There is a wood-burning stove which is more than enough to heat the truck up in cold weather, we opted out of using a diesel heater or gas.

We have left the inside very spacious so there is a lot of room to move about or to build extra seats/beds to accommodate more people and things.

There is a 12V leisure battery inside with two internal lights.

The back of the truck has two barn doors, so the whole wall can be opened to the outside when hot or for loading. There is an additional door is at the side for when the tail lift is up.

Water.

The Unimog has two stainless steel water tanks, one of 230l and one of 70l. The smaller one has a unique heating system, being heated by the exhaust running through a sleeve at the bottom of the tank. This is ideal for having constant hot water on the road and also for unfreezing the tank in the winter. Both tanks have their own taps, so can be run separately or as a unit to heat all the water in both tanks, ideal for expeditions into the northern lands as outside water tanks tend to freeze.

A very good truck for overland expedition, especially where roads are rugged!! We have built and loved this vehicle and had many adventures in her, but the time has come for the next adventure so we are letting her go to pastures new.

  • 8 gears.

The box is GRP faced ply with a steel box section internal frame and is insulated with 75mm of kingspan. The windows are double glazed and there are 2 marine roof hatches (600x600mm) allowing roof access, all these have intergral blackout blinds. It can be accessed via a side door or through the cab via a door behind the drivers seat (very useful as no need for a ladder).

It can sleep 6, 2 in a fixed double bed at the rear, 2 in the over cab luton and 2 converting the table area into a bed.

Electrics: an additional 12v alternator has been fitted along with 2x130w solar panels powering all the living area electrics. All lights are LEDs. A 7.5 tonne electric winch with nylon braided cable is fitted which also has wiring runs and a mounting point on the rear if the only winching point is behind you along with strops, shackles and a land anchor (I only ever used this to recover other people!).

Water: 330L water tank connected to a 30psi shurflo trail king on demand pump. Nature Pure filtration provides drinking water via a separate tap on the sink.

Water heating is either from the trucks own cooling system (30-45mins driving for full heat) or via a 5kw Eberspacher diesel heater, this heater also provides living area heating via two matrix blown air heaters. 33L calorifier is enough for at least 2 showers and washing up. Open plan shower gives better use and sense of space.

Cooker is a SMEV with 4 rings, separate grill, separate oven and pan cupboard fed from a gas cupboard that holds 3x19kg bottles.

There are 4 lockable external cupboards, one gas the others for tools, spares, outside seats etc. Inside there is a full height wardrobe, 2 lockable large cupboards and a multitude of other storage along with 2 electronic safes.

Owner's description:

I have owned this Mog for the last 21 years...

I have owned this Mog for the last 21 years (at 21 it's just come of age so it's time for him to leave home, and on to new adventures) It was made in 1964, this has been verified by Mercedes in Germany. It is a diesel (OM352 ) which runs very well and is fitted with a super creeper gearbox, I have done much work on it during my ownership.

A brief list follows:

  • The brakes have been overhauled, with new linings back and front
  • New wheel cylinders
  • The brake booster was overhauled about 2 years ago.
  • New oil seals have been fitted to the front axle tube (half shaft ends).
  • New seal lands fitted to the half shafts
  • A new seal and land fitted to the drivers side portal drive flange.
  • A full re-wire has been carried out.

Basically what has been needed has been had mechanically. The cab tin-work is starting to show rust on a few areas but nothing serious. The original back body had been run over by something bloody big and was beyond saving, the one it carries at the minute was made by Mackworth commercial body builders for the Staffordshire county libraries and was purchased at auction.

If there is anything you would like to know please contact me by e-mail or phone and I will do my best to answer you quires.

General comment:

This vehicle is a very comfortable unit for two people but could easily be modified to sleep three. The vehicle is in good all round mechanical condition. The body work suffers from scratches and could do with a re-spray to make the vehicle look top notch again. The vehicle is being sold as a complete unit and has all the necessary equipment, cutlery, crockery, pots, pans, Tomos Moped, Honda 1 kva generator and is road ready for another trip.

The NZ Unimog 1300L were higher geared than most German Army 1300L's. This vehicle does 80kmh at 2250 rpm. The OM352A engine produces 168 hp (standard Unimog 1300L 130hp) The max torque is 520Nm (standard Unimog 1300L 363Nm) I purchased the vehicle at 90,000kms and shortly after had fitted the OM352A turbo engine from an accident damaged NZ army Unimog. At the time of the accident the accident damaged Unimog had only done 20,000Kms - this explains the difference in engine kms and chassis kms.

An almost complete service history s available - the NZ army log book is in my possession and I have kept a detailed history of work done. The second owner (I am the third) did not keep any records.

S404 Ex NATO/West German Military.

This Unimog is 1970 vintage, having spent most of its life in Military storage it has covered less than 10,000km and consequently is in excellent condition both mechanically and bodily, benefitting from an LPG conversion which makes it very economical and air assist to the brakes (although it does not have electricifying acceleration from the 2195cc 90Hp Engine)

The canvas roof has recently been replaced and everything works. I would consider a p/x and I can add cash for a U1000 or similar.

"Molly" as she is affectionately known is road legal and taxed and could be driven anywhere although I may be able to arrange delivery, the tyres are as new and the NATO towing unit is equipped with air for a trailer, any Inspection or trial is more than welcome.

Owner's description:

Unimog U900 (417).

This Unimog has just finished being fully overhauled by a Mercedes Benz approved specialist Unimog engineer and parts dealer: completed Oct 2005.

Built in 1988 and having had one owner previous to me, a German Council, the machine was purchased for touring and has been fitted out accordingly. The price reflects the genuinely excellent condition of the machine.

To replace the present back with a simple camper box would cost around £2500. (I also have box windows and an expensive marine 180 degree roof hatch for sale). Of course the sky is the limit on box price but, the back body and canvas back are worth well over £1000 in their present condition so cost could be recouped if that route was decided upon. Mogs can be tough to drive at first but this one has a really smooth action and because of it's size it is really easy to handle and park! The turning circle will blow you away plus it's good on hills!

This Unimog has:

  • 110 hp, splitter gearbox with crawler gears, dual clutch and clutch pedal booster Splitter means 8 gears split into 4 main and 4 intermediate then a high and low range box for those 8 gears and a reverse box for the 8 gears. (amazingly capable). It also has a rocker capability to rock the machine out of trouble between forward and reverse gears without releasing the clutch.
  • Plus two wheel drive, four wheel drive and fully locked differential positions. Can be switched while in motion.
  • Cold starter switch. Will start down to -30!
  • 1-cell hydraulics.
  • 18-20 M.P.G., 5720 hrs, 129,250 Km. (chassis number on application).
  • Up rated high speed diffs have just been fitted with all new bearings and seals Rear and front axles have been completely stripped.
  • Brake calipers are rebuilt.
  • Exhaust brake.
  • New front and rear mudguards.
  • The Mog has been thoroughly serviced and has been MOT’d.
  • Registered on age related plates and taxed until middle of Oct 2006.
  • Upper front working lights.
  • Brand new Unimog battery.
  • 2 extra clip Din sockets in dash.
  • Thatcham approved Cat II alarm (plus further security best to mention on contact with potential buyers).
  • Radio console and Panasonic stereo.
  • The engine bay and cab have been sound proofed.
  • Long range fuel tank (120 litres).
  • Brand New Michelin 335 tyres and a spare wheel in the back. (this will go under the body) with adjustable tyre valves i.e tyres can be water filled. Can fit 385 tyres if need. But I chose these as they are easier to lug around!
  • Air inflation kit (from mogs own air system) and Unimog Jack and proper bonnet key.
  • Cab fully stripped then repaired and repainted in grey, chassis satin black.
  • Cab and body fully rust proofed with Din oyl. There is no rust on this machine.
  • Pristine condition Unimog manual.
  • Convex mirror on passenger side.

Advantage to purchasing this Mog: all the work has been done, all you do is pop a box on the back rig up the electrics and you’re off !

Owner's description:

Unimog 1300L (long wheel base, fast track axles).

Unimog 1300L (long wheel base, fast track axles) 1982 six cylinder Mercedes Benz diesel. This vehicle was bought from Atkinson Vos just over a year ago with the intention of converting the box into a camper and traveling overland, sadly circumstances have changed.

The vehicle has had only two owners from new, one being myself. The milage is 165,000 km (hardly run-in for this type of engine). The Unimog is in good overall condition but needs tidying up in parts, has a couple of rust areas on the front cab near the handle and under the passenger footwell minor work needed to be 100%. It has 8 forward gears and 8 reverse gears.

I have added the following at extra cost to the purchase of the vehicle by Atkinson Vos:

  • Soundproofing kit to the cab.
  • Heavy duty springs.
  • Full Unimog service.
  • Vehicle manual.
  • Two brand new tyres.
  • Two spare wheels.

The box on the back is professionally fitted and measures 12 foot long by 7.5 foot wide by 6.2 inches high, it has double rear opening doors and a single side door. It is made out of stainless steel and aluminium and is not insulated. The box has two side windows and rear windows in the doors as well. The vehicle could suit a number of uses and is completely reliable and has excellent chassis and running gear no knocks leaks and the air system has no faults.

You are welcome to test drive the vehicle and/or have an independent vehicle inspection.

Owner's description:

Ex-NATO Troop Carrier Unimog 404.1.

The Unimog is a 1967 ex-NATO troop carrier 404.1. It is fitted with the 2.2 litre 6 cylinder petrol engine. It has a 6 speed gearbox. Selectable four wheel drive and selectable mechanical diff locks (whilst moving). The engine has been serviced and is running sweet. All the grease points have been greased!

Mechanically the Mog is very good, on test drives everything works as it should. I've done a lot of work to it… including stripping and cleaning all the throttle and choke linkages, new brake linings. New brake wheel cylinders front and rear and stainless steel braided brake hoses on front (£400 parts alone!). The rear chassis of the Mog was shortened to the rear cross member by a previous owner to improve its off road departure angle. I have fabricated a new rear bed using the original suspended frame base. The sides of this and the bottom can be sheeted with steel if required (at the buyers expense).

The soft top is missing but I have the tilt frame in good working order. The tyres are not great but are serviceable. The Mog comes with an air compressor in the engine bay - although not currently plumbed in.

The chassis is in excellent condition and in general the cab is rust free, the worst bits are the front wheel arches which have had some abuse but are very usable.

Registered as an agricultural vehicle so it apparently benefits from MOT exemption as well as being Road Tax Free as Pre 1971.

I'm only selling the Unimog as an extension to the house means I'm loosing my storage space. You really need to come and see the Mog and you are welcome to email for any more information or photos.

Owner's description:

Unimog S404 1963. Excellent Condition.

The Unimog is being sold as a chassis with cab. There is a radio back body if you want it at no extra cost. This has the body suspension system attatched to it which is essential if you wish to go off roading with a back body on. I could possibly arrange for this to be loaded onto a lorry or the back of the Unimog by my next door neighbour with his Hiab.

The back axle was the only bad area of rust and as been cleaned up and etch primed and is immaculate. The radio suspressed leads have been converted to standard HT leads. This is a saving of £450.00 every time you change the leads. The Cab is in good condition. A new clutch as been fitted.

I have everything to complete the Unimog, some painted some not. It is a good, cheap, short term restoration project. There is also a brand new factory canvas worth £400.00 which as never been on.

It starts first time.

The Unimog as been run in my yard regular to keep the brakes free and everything lubricated and as never been on a wet road since I purchased it. It as also been garaged all the time I have owned it. The only other owner was the German Army.
