The car park adjacent to the marina at Pylos (36.915009 21.697415) makes a great overnight parking place and is only a hundred metres from the excellent Koukos restaurant.
If the fishermen can be bothered you can buy fish from them on the quay side (or not).
The Neo Kastro (Castle) on the hill was built by the Turks in 1573 and is well worth a visit (though not on Tuesday when it is closed). Some of the exhibits are unlabeled like these three cannon and a street light.
Twelve kilometers south of Pylos at Methoni we visited our second castle a 15th century Venetian fortress.
Our third castle was at Koroni, an easy walk from the friendly but slightly run-down camp site (Koroni Camping - 36.799478 21.951002). There were signs prohibiting motorhomes and caravans from entering the town but one brave soul had got his 7.5 metre van down to the harbour apparently without problem.
Our intention was to move on to our fourth castle at Mystras and camp at Castle View Camping which was scheduled to open on the 1st of April however they had decided not to bother and waved us away somewhat dismissively. Unfortunately whilst turning round in a nearby car park we ran over a large piece of reinforcing rod embedded in the ground. Hence the need to change the wheel.
We are now parked just outside the main entrance to the castle in the "lower car park" (at 37.076582 22.369108) with one other van waiting for the castle to open at 08:00.
