Brexit and...
As several people have pointed out we have not (apparently) been anywhere in our truck since 2013. This is not true. We have actually been on several European trips from the UK to Norway, to Portugal, to Croatia and skiing in France. These trips have been interesting but not very adventurous. We have also been to Malta, Vietnam & Cambodia (not in our truck).
One of the reasons why motorhome travel within Europe is currently easy is the EU. As an EU citizen there are very few immigration checks, our UK insurance is accepted in most places, our UK driving licences and vehicle registration are accepted and we also have reciprocal health care in most of Europe. It is all so easy.
As an aside as well as making motorhome travel easy the EU has probably also reduced the probability of another war in Europe, helped many of the poorer parts of Europe develop, given us the opportunity to work, study and retire anywhere in the EU as well as lots of more mundane things like a cap on mobile phone roaming charges and some protection from surveillance capitalism. Still I digress.
Some years ago, to placate a minority of members of the UK Conservative party a prime minister (who's name now escapes me) decided to unify his party with a referendum (that he expected to win) on the UK's membership of the EU. Whilst the vast majority of UK MPs wished to remain in the EU the country voted 52% to 48% to leave (Hence British Exit from the EU - Brexit). So far it has turned out to be far more difficult to leave the EU without damaging the UK and EU economies than it was to persuade the public to vote for it. Now nearly three years later (when the balance of public opinion may well have changed from "leave" to "remain") we are on the verge of crashing out of the EU without a deal within days.
There is a certain sad irony in setting out on a tour of Europe in a UK registered vehicle in the the midst of Brexit. Today it looks as if we will leave Italy on a ferry to Greece and cease to be EU citizens during the trip!
