Owner's comments:

Originally this had a snow blower on the front but it was removed and left in Lancaster.

I had a few problems at first especially with the brakes but they are all sorted now. The main job left is to tidy the electrics and sort out a problem with the glow system.

Owner's comments:

I bought the '70 in 2000 when it was in a really rough state. It'd been used as a crop sprayer from new and the chemicals had rotted away the rear wall of the cab. All the wheel cylinders were completely shot from lack of use. South Cave Tractors Ltd. near York easily sorted out all the spares I needed. Welding the cab was a nightmare though. Over the past 3 years I've gradually managed to find some of the missing bits, like 3-point linkage, cab roof etc. I even managed to weld up a windscreen frame from the remains of 3 rotten ones.

Shortly after buying this one I bought the '68 as a spares vehicle, it's cab is virtually non-existent (more air and rust than steel!), but at 200 quid you can't complain! It even drove home under it's own power after a lay-up of 5 or 6 years. Once home we found that when both doors were opened together the rear half of the cab fell off. I did say it was RUSTY! Unfortunately, as "the bug" has bitten deeper, plans have slowly evolved into making both of them good! It also means I'm always on the lookout for spares to satisfy the addiction.

I'm near Nottingham if any like minded folk wish to call round to talk Mog.

Model:

404S

Date Built:

1960?

Date Acquired:

Last millennium.

Use:

Currently it has three principle uses:-

  1. By blocking the sun light and leaking fluids it prevents the weeds from growing.
  2. It gives my wife something to moan about which is vital for her mental health.
  3. It gives me something to do other than work.

Owner's comments:

I bought it as a spares vehicle but it turned out to be better than the one I was restoring. I plan to use it as a big toy for pay and play days in local quarries and the alike. So far I have tackled the tranny, the axles, the brakes, fabricate a roll cage and a few other jobs.

Still outstanding are the electrics, a windscreen, weather proofing and a bit more paint. So at the current rate of progress it should be out and about around 2006!

Happy Mogging.

Update: December 2003. After a carb’ rebuild, the fabrication of a new throttle pedal and a general service the Unimog has finally seen some action in the mud. It's not road legal yet so had to be taken on a trailer but finally I can see some reward for all the work.

As to off road performance – With knobbly tyres, portal axles and diff’ locks its performance in the mud was never in doubt. I was surprised how well it climbed steep hills providing it could find enough grip, I guess the weight forward bias of the beast assists greatly. Descending steep hills is bottom cheek clenching as the forward weight bias tends to lift the rear wheels of the deck. The main shortcoming is the low power to weight ratio (28bhp/tonne) which prohibits hill climbing in 3rd.

Overall I like it, in fact I like it a lot.

Unimog 416. Ex French NATO. 1450 hours on engine. 55,500 kilometers on odometer. Power steering, disc brakes all round. All standard on a modern Unimogs but for 1978 I think it says a lot about Mercedes. I fitted a box from a Unimog 404 radio truck to it.

Owner's comments:

Originally registered in 1990 and used as a demonstrator. Then sold to the MOD to shuttle VIP's around one of their bases. Later bought back by the dealer (Arthur Ibbett Ltd) and used by them as a delivery vehicle. It has now attained a massive 785 hours and 12,500 Kilometers. Specification includes; 24 Gears Double Hydraulics Diff Locks OM366LA Engine 165HP 3 way hydraulic platform Rockinger hitch CrewCab with bench seat 14.5R20 tyres and wheels. Snorkel and High level exhaust Front and rear PTO.

The children have fallen in love with it and get most upset when they go in a normal car now. Even bedtime stories have to be read in the truck to get them to go to sleep so we can get on with working on it!
